EP68 Sailing Bay of Biscay Twice: 1 "usual"; 2 in Gale Conditions
I do a quick back and forth across the Bay of Biscay -- once in 'normal' (acceptable) conditions, and 2nd in unexpected Gale conditions. I demonstrate 'scandalising the main' as well as putting in a reef in challenging conditions. I also show/discuss problems with Volvo Penta engine mounts, my Lewmar windlass and a malfunctioning solar panel. Finish with discussion of Code Zero vs Gennaker (large asymmetric spinnaker) and a celebration of 30 Biscay crossings.

EP 67 Sailing home to France from Rockall, Sula Sgeir and Ireland
Просмотров 24 тыс.Месяц назад
Nothing too exciting in this passage: just basic sailing for 550 NM from Ireland to France to close out my "3 Body Problem" adventure. I demo putting a reef in, test a 'sheet to tiller' steerage system, explain crossing a tidal race, discuss entering a port at night, show the range of AIS receivers at sea, and dive to free my entangled propellor. I divert to Camaret Sur Mer due to lack of wind ...

I sail 250 NM to an isolated rock (Sula Sgeir) off the north coast of Scotland, and then turn south for a 350 NM non-stop passage to Dun Laoghaire Ireland (near Dublin). The objective is to see if the tides in the Hebrides / North Channel are too strong to sail against. While I was slowed to 1.8 knots for 3 hours while abeam Islay/Rathlin, the rest was completely doable non-stop. I demo 'shakin...

I do a bit of pre-departure maintenance, and then cast off my lines for Rockall an isolated Atlantic rock 250 NM Northwest of Ireland. A few maneuver demos (hove to, docking), the Volvo MDI bypass, a sad bird story, reefing strategy and some musical references to test your cultural depth. :-) 1030 NM sailed from La Rochelle to Rockall. Part 1 of two part series.
Ep 64 Sailing Solo Iceland to Norway Direct
Просмотров 46 тыс.Год назад
I take an unusual passage route to sail solo directly to Northern Norway from Iceland. Conditions are tough, but by sailing further North than planned, I was able to turn downwind when winds of 30-35 arrived. I unfurl and furl the 'gennaker', deal with an engine issue, mistake a lighthouse for an aircraft carrier, and finally meet a barman with Châteauneuf-du-Pape in stock.

I leave the island port off the SW coast of Iceland and proceed up the West Coast, visiting 6 ports in the majestic Western Fjords. I also show some aspects of using Raymarine's AIS system. (I still have much to learn before this is mastered....

I sail across the North Atlantic from Newfoundland to Ireland in early July 2022. I am very fortunate in my selection of wx window, as the passage is almost like a Trade Wind passage (except the cold and fog). Hi Patrick, breeze looked brisk and exciting, you were calm. On the engine mount subject. I've had a similar corrosion issue one side only, i replaced the mount to find it started again, i initially sprayed the new mount with a CRC product called soft seal until i could find time to look more closely. Its been so successful in 18 months, nil issue.

My two cents on reefing of the wind. Depower the main (ease sheet, vang and scandalize). Ease main halyard 1 foot. Trim reef lines tight. Ease main 1 more foot. Trim reef lines another tight. Keep repeating. This inching it down prevents getting looped on the lazy jacks or hooked on the shrouds. I love my asymmetrical spin as it makes sailing 145 TWA in 9 knots true fun. I don’t furl it and find that easier as the sail is much lighter to drag on deck than a sail with a cable. Enjoy. I am in Lorient now.

Hi Patrick - we were interested in your "Downwind sail drop" as we tried it last year and failed miserably (the term "fiasco might be employed!! 😄) so at least we do not feel like "newbies" as we might have done if you made it look oh-so-easy!! Your Lewmar issue is something we have seen with other vertical windlasses and reinforces our belief that horizontal ones are better because they always seem to have encased motors. Finally, we have invested in a bottle of Chateau Neuf du Pape to see if it is worth the fuss 😮We were drinking Chateau Les Cruzelles at Xmas and it will be interesting to compare.

Certainly none of the locals pay it any heed when moving back and forth across the border. As always, the island of Ireland has its own way of doing things! But since you did go past, we are trying a "Cargo Cult" technique to prevent future occurnaces. You could try fitting a Cunningham led back to the cockpit, from the mainsail head that along with the halyard, you could push-me/pull-you the main down on the run. I suspect sheeting the boom off rigging may play a beneficial role if you try it. You may have to be creative with the vertical bit to stop mast slap......and it may simply not work. But trying it might provide you a character building exercise that I'm sure you would benefit from Pat. I think others may use a similar approach for cockpit based 3rd reefing. Go whole hog and fit both if they work😂. But I want a credit on the video (but only if it works).

    • @patricklaine6958

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958 4 дня назад

This type of boat (wide, flat hull) is made for surfing while headed downwind. When the boat surfs, the apparent wind changes very rapidly. Wind vanes work on apparent wind, and can not cope with rapid changes. Very few boats of this style are equipped with them. Instead, they often fit hydrogenerators to provide the extra powder needed to run the autopilot.

I looked at that mount system yesterday. There are four bolts into the side of the engine. This may well work if I can access those bolts with a large wrench in my very tight engine compartment. Thanks.

Hi! If In can choose only one light weather sail... It will be a traditional spinaker. With a boom you can everything with it. Also solo with some practice... Nice channel! Keep sailing!

😢Cr@p batteries driving auto pilot, crap solar.....time for a windvane. Hydrovane is useful for when something down there eats your rudder.

This type of boat (wide, flat hull) is designed for surfing while headed downwind. When the boat surfs, the apparent wind changes very rapidly. Wind vanes work on apparent wind, and can not cope with rapid changes. Very few boats of this style are equipped with them. Instead, they often fit hydrogenerators to provide the extra powder needed to run the autopilot. Hydrovane made me a very attractive quote, but it's just not right for the boat....

@@patricklaine6958 that's interesting Pat. I didn't realise there were boats that were too efficient for windvanes. I love the idea of them so much that I think we should buy a hydrovane and select the most compatible boat to attach to it.

I've almost smelled the breeze while you were hoisting the main sail... Thank you! And God bless for you next trip!
